What it is
Cua is an open-source toolkit for computer use: letting an AI agent see a screen and use apps the way you do. It has three parts you'll care about:
- Cua Driver lets your agent operate desktop apps and browsers on macOS, Windows and Linux, through a CLI, MCP or an SDK.
- Cua Spaces is a Mac app that gives agents full desktops: a macOS virtual machine on your Mac, or a Linux image, on your own machines or your own cloud account.
- Lume creates macOS and Linux virtual machines on Apple Silicon.
Why it matters
- It works in the background. Where the app and platform support it, the Driver works without moving your pointer or stealing focus, so you keep using your Mac.
- It plugs into the agent you already use. There are setup guides for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and others.
- Your real desktop stays out of reach. Give the agent a Space or a VM when you don't want it near your files and logins.
Get started
Install Cua Driver on macOS or Linux:
/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://cua.ai/driver/install.sh)"Connect it to your agent with the integration guide, then try the first test from the docs: ask the agent to work out 6 × 7 in Calculator and check that it shows 42.
Want the full desktop app instead? On macOS 26 or later:
curl -fsSL https://cua.ai/install.sh | shBefore you use it
- Read an install script before you pipe it into your shell. Both commands above download and run a script from cua.ai.
- Spaces needs macOS 26 or later, and its licence is FSL-1.1-MIT (source-available), not MIT like the rest of the repo. It's free for individuals; paid plans are listed as “coming soon”.
- Background control has limits. It depends on the app and the platform, and the docs list what works where.
- An agent with a computer can do real damage. Start it in a Space or a VM, not on your main desktop with everything signed in.
